Dental emergencies often happen at the worst possible moment; perhaps you’re playing with your kids at the park, enjoying your holiday or getting ready for an important business meeting. When the unexpected happens, it can make you feel anxious, scared and unsure of what to do next.

Instead of facing this uncertainty alone, our experienced dental team is here to help alleviate your pain and provide prompt treatment, restoring your oral health. We’ll assist you in any way we can and work to get you feeling like yourself again.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Certain dental issues don’t require immediate care, but if you’re ever unsure, we encourage you to call our dental clinic.

These are some of the most common dental emergencies we treat in our Wagga Wagga clinic:

  • Severe tooth pain that doesn’t subside

  • Chipped, cracked or broken teeth
  • A dental abscess or swelling around a tooth
  • Soft tissue injuries to the cheek, mouth or gums

What to Expect During Your Visit

When you arrive for an emergency dental appointment, the first priority is to assess your situation and relieve your discomfort.

Here’s what usually happens:

  • An examination of the affected area
  • X-rays, if needed, to identify the cause of pain or damage
  • Immediate pain relief (such as medication, numbing, or drainage)
  • Temporary or permanent treatment, depending on the issue

Common emergencies we treat include:

  • Severe toothaches
  • Knocked-out or cracked teeth
  • Broken fillings or crowns
  • Gum swelling or infections
  • Trauma from sports or accidents

We will explain your options clearly and may schedule follow-up care to complete any necessary treatment.

What to Do Before You Reach the Clinic

We urge you to contact us if you or a loved one experiences a dental emergency. However, there are some steps you can take before your emergency appointment that can make a significant difference.

Here are some tips on handling an emergency dental situation:

  • Severe pain and swelling — The best thing to do is take over-the-counter pain medication and place a cold compress on your cheek for 15 to 20-minute intervals. This can help numb the area and give you some relief, as well as reduce swelling.
  • Knocked-out tooth — Time is critical if your tooth gets completely knocked out. The sooner you reach our dental clinic, the better our chances are of saving your tooth. Without touching the tooth’s roots, try to reinsert it into the socket. If that doesn’t work, place it in a glass of milk or inside your cheek.
  • Broken tooth or filling — If you break your tooth or filling, rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This can help flush debris and food particles from your mouth, reducing the risk of infection. Also, it’s best to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
  • Soft tissue injury — When your gums are bleeding, or you’ve sustained an injury to your lips or cheek, try applying gentle pressure to the area until the bleeding stops. For uncontrollable bleeding, you may need to go to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Digital X-Rays and Sensors

Digital X-Rays and Sensors

When we need to capture detailed images of your teeth and jaw, these low-radiation sensors are a safe way to help us diagnose a wide range of dental concerns. They’re more environmentally friendly than traditional x-rays, and they minimise your exposure. We use digital x-rays for early diagnosis and customised treatment plans.
