Sleep Apnoea/Snoring Treatment

If you or your partner wakes up with a headache, snores loudly, gasps for breath, or feels tired no matter how much time you spend in bed, you may suffer from sleep apnoea. This disruptive sleep issue is more than just a nuisance; it can have harmful effects on your overall health and quality of life.

At Best St. Dental, we realise how disruptive snoring and sleep apnoea can be, so we’re committed to helping you breathe easier and get the quality sleep you deserve.

So, whether your sleep difficulties are just beginning or you’ve already been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea, our dental team can provide you with the guidance you need to feel like yourself again.

What Is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder where your airway becomes blocked while you’re asleep; this happens when your throat muscles and tongue relax too much. As a result, your tongue may drop toward the back of your throat, or your soft tissues may collapse inward.

When this happens, you’ll momentarily stop breathing, and this can occur dozens of times per hour. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health concerns.

Although snoring alone doesn’t necessarily mean you have sleep apnoea, it is often a red flag.

The most common signs and symptoms of sleep apnoea include the following:

  • Snoring loudly
  • Waking up frequently
  • Gasping and choking while asleep
  • Having a difficult time concentrating
  • Feeling tired during the day
  • Being irritable and moody
  • Waking up with a headache or sore throat

Frequently Asked Questions

Sleep apnoea and chronic snoring don’t just affect your sleep; they can have serious consequences for your health, energy and quality of life. At Best St. Dental in Wagga Wagga, we collaborate closely with sleep specialists to effectively identify and treat these issues. While we don’t diagnose sleep apnoea directly, we often play a key role in managing it, especially for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

What’s the First Step?

The first step is always a referral to a sleep specialist for a comprehensive sleep study. This ensures an accurate diagnosis and determines whether you’ll need a CPAP machine or another form of treatment. For patients who cannot tolerate CPAP, or whose condition doesn’t require one, we can offer a custom-fitted mandibular advancement splint to help manage symptoms.

What Is a Mandibular Splint and How Does It Work?

A mandibular advancement splint is a specially designed oral appliance that gently repositions your lower jaw (mandible) during sleep. Moving the jaw slightly forward helps to:

  • Keep the airway open
  • Reduce vibrations that cause snoring
  • Minimise apnoea events (pauses in breathing)

The splint is custom-made to fit your mouth and is adjustable to suit your needs over time.

When Should You See a Dentist for Snoring or Sleep Apnoea?

You might benefit from a dental assessment if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea
  • Struggle with CPAP compliance
  • Experience nightly snoring, dry mouth or morning headaches

How Treatment Works at Best St. Dental

Our experienced dental team collaborates with a local sleep specialist to get you a proper diagnosis.

Here’s what the treatment process looks like:

  • Consultation — We’ll begin by discussing your symptoms and concerns and answering any questions you may have.
  • Referral — If your symptoms are indicative of sleep apnoea, we will refer you to a trusted sleep specialist for a sleep study. This sleep study monitors your breathing, oxygen levels and the quality of your sleep.
  • Determining treatment — Once the sleep specialist has read the results, they may recommend CPAP therapy. A CPAP machine is the best treatment for severe sleep apnoea. However, if you don’t have sleep apnoea or it’s mild to moderate, you may be referred back to our dental clinic for treatment options.
  • Fitting for a mandibular splint — A dental splint is a customised mouthpiece that repositions your jaw while you sleep, keeping your airway open and drastically reducing your snoring and sleep apnoea events. You’ll be surprised at how discreet and comfortable a dental splint can be; most people prefer them to wearing a bulky CPAP mask.
