Periodontal Treatment and Hygiene

When you think about going to the dentist, you’re probably thinking about your teeth, right? Well, the truth is that your gum health is just as important as keeping your teeth free from decay and other issues.

Gum disease affects many people, and it can slowly progress, causing damage to your overall health. If it’s left untreated, you could even experience tooth loss. That’s why we offer science-backed periodontal treatment and hygiene education to our patients in Wagga Wagga and the surrounding communities.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a preventable condition that occurs when bacteria accumulate on your teeth and gums, forming sticky plaque. When not removed during a routine dental clean or when you brush your teeth, it begins to irritate your gums.

Also known as periodontal disease, numerous factors, including poor oral hygiene, smoking, genetics, age, stress and certain medical conditions, can cause gum disease.

Some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Red and swollen gums
  • Tender gums
  • Bleeding when you brush and floss
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Pain when biting down or chewing

Why Treat Gum Disease Early?

Did you know that treating gum disease early can save your teeth and improve your overall well-being? Calling our dental clinic for periodontal treatment can benefit you in the following ways:
Prevents Tooth Loss
When you treat periodontal disease, you have a better chance of preserving your natural teeth and avoiding extractions.
Improves Gum Health
Seeking treatment for gum disease as early as possible reduces inflammation and redness, improving your gum health.
Lowers Health Risks
Certain health issues, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, have been linked to gum disease.
Provides a Healthy Smile
Once you seek treatment and improve your hygiene practices, you can expect to have fresher breath and a healthier smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Healthy gums are the foundation of a strong smile, but gum disease can creep in quietly, causing damage long before you feel pain. The good news? Gum disease is largely preventable with the right habits and regular care.

At Best St. Dental, we’re passionate about helping patients in Wagga Wagga protect their oral health and avoid long-term problems.

If you're experiencing bleeding gums, bad breath or tenderness, it may be the early stage of gum disease (gingivitis). Acting right away is the key to stopping it from progressing.

Simple Habits That Protect Your Gums

Preventing gum disease starts at home with a few daily habits and good choices:

  • Brush your teeth every day with a soft toothbrush.
  • Floss each day to remove food debris and bacteria.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash if recommended by your dentist.
  • Avoid smoking, which increases your risk significantly.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins C and D, which support gum health.

Just a few minutes a day can help prevent inflammation and keep plaque from turning into hardened tartar.

Regular Dental Visits Make All the Difference

Even with perfect brushing, professional care is essential:

  • Schedule a checkup and clean every six months.
  • Ask your dentist to assess your gum health during visits.
  • Early signs of gum disease (like gingivitis) can often be reversed with professional cleaning.
  • For more advanced gum issues, your dentist may recommend deep cleaning or periodontal treatment.

Catching problems early can save you from more serious gum disease (periodontitis) later.

How We Treat Gum Disease at Best St. Dental

At our dental clinic, we focus on improved hygiene practices to prevent gum disease. Our team works with you on proper brushing and flossing techniques to keep your mouth clean and healthy.

When you visit us for a routine checkup, we’ll take a biofilm sample to help us identify harmful bacteria in your mouth. If you have gum disease, we’ll customise a treatment plan to restore your oral health.

Part of your treatment may include deep debridement, known as scaling and root planing.

Here’s what you can expect from this procedure:

  • Scaling — Before we begin, we’ll completely numb your gums so you won’t feel anything during treatment. This will minimise your discomfort. Then, we’ll use specialised dental tools to remove the plaque and tartar from below your gumline, preventing further damage.
  • Root planing — Once the scaling process is complete, we’ll smooth your tooth’s roots (planing) to keep bacteria from accumulating. This part of the process provides a clean surface so your gums can reattach more easily.
  • Aftercare — Before you leave, we’ll give you detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth when you get home. We’ll encourage you to brush and floss regularly and prioritise routine dental visits.

Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy

Once we’ve identified the bacterial biofilm on your teeth and gums, this treatment removes the bacteria and calculus from your mouth with warm water and erythritol powder. Guided biofilm therapy (GBT) is suitable for routine dental cleanings and periodontal maintenance, providing a comfortable way to help you maintain optimal oral health.

Larkin Microscopic Biofilm Analysis

Larkin Microscopic Biofilm Analysis

This advanced, science-backed analysis makes it possible for us to examine the bacteria in your mouth at a microscopic level. Doing so helps us to identify harmful pathogens that can lead to periodontal disease. Once we recognise the issue, we can tailor treatment to your individual needs and get your oral health back on track.
