Can my dentist help with sleep apnoea and snoring?

Sleep apnoea and chronic snoring don’t just affect your sleep; they can have serious consequences for your health, energy and quality of life. At Best St. Dental in Wagga Wagga, we collaborate closely with sleep specialists to effectively identify and treat these issues. While we don’t diagnose sleep apnoea directly, we often play a key role in managing it, especially for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

What’s the First Step?

The first step is always a referral to a sleep specialist for a comprehensive sleep study. This ensures an accurate diagnosis and determines whether you’ll need a CPAP machine or another form of treatment. For patients who cannot tolerate CPAP, or whose condition doesn’t require one, we can offer a custom-fitted mandibular advancement splint to help manage symptoms.

What Is a Mandibular Splint and How Does It Work?

A mandibular advancement splint is a specially designed oral appliance that gently repositions your lower jaw (mandible) during sleep. Moving the jaw slightly forward helps to:

  • Keep the airway open
  • Reduce vibrations that cause snoring
  • Minimise apnoea events (pauses in breathing)

The splint is custom-made to fit your mouth and is adjustable to suit your needs over time.

When Should You See a Dentist for Snoring or Sleep Apnoea?

You might benefit from a dental assessment if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea
  • Struggle with CPAP compliance
  • Experience nightly snoring, dry mouth or morning headaches
